Aim high. Climb far. Your aim the sky. Your goal the stars.

The first day of school this year is Wednesday, August 28. Back-to-School packets and teacher supply lists will come home with your child on the first day of school. Please be sure to review the packets as there are many forms that need to be returned as well as a great deal of valuable information for your reference.

Below is a link is to a blog created by Parkside Assistant Principal, Dan Lyttle and El Crystal Principal, Skip Johnson. Use this link to give them feedback on what technologies and what 21st Century Skills you believe students should have access to and be learning. The blog is not part of the district but a project of “Leading Edge Certification"

The Academic Music Timeline

Kindergarten begins with lots of music-game based learning tied to sound, rhythm and pitch recognition. Students learn to play the pre-recorder.

First graders move from pre-recorders to standard size recorders. This new instrument has the same finger technique as many other wind instruments like the flute, clarinet, saxophone and many others. Percussion is introduced with drumsticks.

Second graders learn many new pieces and have experience with more instruments including boomwhackers. Duet playing is introduced. Mathematical concepts included addition, multiplication, and number sense as well as an introduction to fractions.

Third graders learn to read standard music notation as they refine their understanding of fractions. All previous years of Academic Music come to fruition on a new and fascinating level.

Fourth graders learned basic algebra through music. They listened to European, Mexican, and American (Jazz) music then turned the music examples into algebraic expressions
