Welcome to El Crystal:

EL Crystal
First SBPSD STEM/Magnet School

The staff and I are very excited to have become a STEM/Magnet School. Throughout last year and during two weeks this summer we created a STEM curriculum for our students. To ensure that we have planned and implemented the best program possible, we have established a partnership with Notre Dame de Namur University. This was made possible by a grant from the Danford Foundation. Members of the Mathematics and Science Departments coach our teachers by looking closely at our curriculum and observing STEM lessons to give constructive feedback on ways to improve our program especially with creating new teaching strategies.
I meet every Monday afternoon with Dr. Robert Ferrera to monitor the overall progress o f our STEM activities. A site leadership team composed of teachers Adrienne Hwee, Pam Mooers, Colleen Hennessy, and Laura Logue meet with a team from Notre Dame every other week to take a close look at our curriculum. The long-range plan is to create an assessment model for this program that our school and other emerging STEM schools can use to review and improve their program.

Our Mission is to provide our students with 21st Century learning that develops creative thinkers, collaborative learners, effective communicators, , and productive members of a global society.

STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. The program was designed by the National Science Foundation to revolutionize the teaching of math and science by integrating technology and engineering into the regular curriculum.

The California Department of Education's definition of a magnet school:
"A magnet program is a program in a public school that usually focuses on a special area of study, such as science, the performing arts, or career education. A magnet school is an entire school with a special focus. These programs and schools are designed to attract students from across a district. Students may choose to attend a magnet school instead of their local school."

21st Century Skills

Below is a link is to a blog created by Parkside Assistant Principal, Dan Lyttle and El Crystal Principal, Skip Johnson. Use this link to give them feedback on what technologies and what 21st Century Skills you believe students should have access to and be learning. The blog is not part of the district but a project of “Leading Edge Certification"
