Welcome to El Crystal STEM Magnet School

Dear Families and Visitors,

Welcome to EL Crystal STEM Magnet Elementary School! El Crystal takes an integrated STEM approach that embeds science, technology, engineering, and mathematics across the school curriculum.

In the STEM tradition, students observe natural phenomena in the world as both investigators and designers. When observing natural phenomena, students make hypotheses and then collect data to validate, rule out, or revise hypotheses. Students also identify real-world challenges and prototype solutions. As a result of an integrated STEM approach, students become facile in their investigation and design. Design Thinking increasingly marks the teaching at El Crystal as staff are further trained through Stanford University research and collaboration.

El Crystal students hone skills in technology and mathematics, as languages to record and organize STEM data. Students learn that mathematics is the basis for the computation language of computers and will increasingly apply mathematics in coding and other mathematical pursuits.Statistics and frequencies help students derive meaning in numbers. STEM truly helps students achieve more as they take the real world and identify patterns and make meaning in the process.

Newly this year El Crystal benefits from two district initiatives. Students will learn English Language Arts through the newly adopted Wonders, program. Additionally, school staff has been trained in Capture Kids Hearts. This results in classroom Social Contracts that are developed with students’ input.

It will be an exciting year of capturing kids’ hearts, so that we can engage their minds. Hearts and minds is a great place for the STEM family to begin this year!
We look forward to our working together!

Jeanne Elliott

EL Crystal
a Fully Integrated STEM Magnet School

As we begin our third year as a fully-integrated STEM Magnet School, our students continue to learn through integrated problem-based and hands-on activities that challenge them in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. By participating in a rigorous and demanding curriculum, our goal is to develop students that demonstrate exceptional Critical Thinking, Collaboration, Communication, and Creativity skills.

The California Department of Education's definition of a magnet school:
"A magnet program is a program in a public school that usually focuses on a special area of study, such as science, the performing arts, or career education. A magnet school is an entire school with a special focus. These programs and schools are designed to attract students from across a district. Students may choose to attend a magnet school instead of their local school."
